A pharmacy in the UK, the General Medicines Directorate has revealed that a man has been found at his home in London, with prescription medicines containing sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, the same medicine for erectile dysfunction (ED) used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and high blood pressure.
The man, who is believed to be between 20 and 25, has been found in his home and in his regular pharmacy, but was not given any prescription medication.
The man has been found to have bought the following prescription medicines over the past five years without having any medical prescription, the Directorate said:
“Viagra is a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but it can also be an aphrodisiac,” it added.
The Directorate’s spokesperson said: “The men at our pharmacy are in the process of getting their prescriptions checked for all their health conditions.”
The man was told to take a blood pressure test and take an alpha-blocker, which is also prescribed for ED.
“The men have been told that they need to be tested for their risk of developing ED.”
The man had also been given a questionnaire in which he was asked to include information about erectile dysfunction, such as their medical history, how they have been treated, the most recent medicines they have taken, the number of prescriptions they have taken and the time they were prescribed the medicine.
The Directorate said it was notifying the men at the pharmacy of the problem.
The man was advised to consult a pharmacist or other health professional who will be able to determine if he is a suitable candidate for treatment.
The Directorate said: “We will be in touch with them in the future regarding the men’s health and prescription drugs.
“If the men are suffering from a serious medical condition, we will inform them of the problem with our pharmacy and provide them with the appropriate treatment.”
“We will be working with the Department of Health and Social Care to provide advice and treatment to all men and women in need,” the Directorate said.
